Argentina, 1979. After years of exile, Juan and his family come back to Argentina under fake identities. Juan's parents and his uncle Beto are members of the Montoneros Organization, which is fighting against the Military Junta that rules the country. Because of their political activities they are being tracked down relentlessly, and the threat of capture and even death is constant. However, Juan's daily life is also full of warmth and humor, and he quickly and easily integrates into his new environment. His friends at school and the girl he has a gigantic crush on, Maria, know him as Ernesto, a name he must not forget, since his family's survival is at stake. Juan accepts this and follows all of his parents' rules until one day he is told that they need to move again immediately, and leave his friends and Maria behind without an explanation. In a little airport near Santiago, Chile, live three airplanes, a papa plane, which carries mail over the Andes between Chile and Argentina, a mama plane, and a baby plane, Pedro. One day, his father has a cold in his cylinder head, so Pedro gets the call to cross the Andes, past the forbidding peak of Aconcagua, to pick up and bring back the mail from Mendoza. Pedro takes off, and the trip to Argentina goes well. Then, Pedro gets cocky, and the return trip goes badly. Will Aconcagua claim another victim? And what of the mail, does it get through?

Two grifters - boyish, likable Juan and hard-edged, scheming Marcos - meet by chance. Marcos, who seems to have cheated everyone he knows including his siblings, is missing his partner, so he offers to teach Juan tricks for a day. Juan accepts because he has some savings, but needs more to bribe a judge to release his father from prison. Marcos gets a call from an aging, ill ex-associate needing help to sell a forged set of rare stamps, the Nine Queens, to a businessman about to be deported (he can't take cash out of Argentina, but could take the stamps). When the con men have to improvise, Marcos asks Juan to use his savings to set up the deal. Is Juan about to be conned?

He goes to a south small town where the only law is from sheriff Velarde, a criminal in uniform who has ties to the army. The sheriff don't trust anyway and the new guy in town Koblic bothers him. As Koblic realize he needs to go away, he will not leave without bringing justice.

They decide to plan their own robberies, but they are amateurs and things don't go too well. One of the youths, Cordoba, whose girlfriend Sandra is pregnant, just wants to get enough cash so they can leave Argentina and get to Uruguay to start a new life. He and his friends plan one last robbery, but things don't go as planned.
